The formation process

Well. The CVD or Chemical Vapour Deposition is one of the most popular ways to formulate diamonds in a laboratory environment. Under this process, a diamond seed is used. The diamond seed is put on a chamber, specially designed. And gradually, the seed grows into a complete piece of diamond.

During the formation process, the chamber is filled with carbon-rich gas like hydrogen and methane. The gas gets a high temperature inside the chamber. Besides, microwaves are applied in the chamber. The microwave makes the plasma that triggers the gases inside the chamber.

Next, the carbon plays the most important role by depositing the seeds of diamond. It forms layer after layer and shapes the diamond. The process takes a couple of months to complete.

And finally, you have the lab grown diamonds UK. However, the diamond remains rough and needs polishing and shaping. It’s the last stage of CVD process.


The HPHT refers to high pressure high temperature process. Following this method, diamonds are grown in laboratories. The process is almost similar to the CVD one. But the diamonds undergo high pressure and temperature during the formation.

As the first step, a diamond seed is collected and put in a chamber which is pressurized. Then, a mixture of graphite and metal is set around the seed.

Now, the chamber is made pressurized. The high pressure measures around 6 GPa, while the high temperature is over 1500 degree C. It is the process that the natural diamonds undergo during their natural formation.

Following the pressure and temperature, the carbon atoms get a reshape. The crystals of diamonds are formed. The process may take more than a couple of days for a complete shaping.

Finally, after the diamond grown, the pressure is released. Gradually, the chamber gets cool. The diamond is brought out from the chamber, polished and shaped. The jewellers also cut the diamond as per the directives of the clients for customization.

So, these are the two widely used process for lab grown diamonds. No wonder the diamonds share the same physical, chemical and other physical properties like the diamonds extracted from earth.
